This is a very simple but important activity which recognizes the achievements of those children of employees”, said Chief Executive Officer, Major General ret’d Joseph Singh, in his remarks to attendees at the recent annual bursary awards ceremony held by GT&T.

Twenty-One children of employees were recognized and rewarded for their outstanding achievement at the 2008 Grade Six Assessment Exams,

Delicia Paul, whose mother Ms. is employed as a Customer Service Rep at BV, was the most outstanding student of the batch and received free DSL service compliments of the Company.

The other recipients of bursaries were Christial Amsterdam, Shane Boodramlall, Kyle Chase, Jomella David, Samira Duncan, Adesina Hiles, Athea Jailall, Anfernee Jarvis, Lakesha John, Shakina Kirton, Ashley London Travyan Lyken, Keziah McDonald, Joash Mentis, Terissa Mitchell, Marlon Parris, Annecia Skeete, Liviona Watts, Ian Williams Jr. and Kiaza Lewis.

The CEO, in his remarks under the theme ‘Investing for the future’, said that it takes a special brand of parent not to get lost in work and neglect their responsibilities to their children.

He said the awardees are lucky as they are not exposed to some of the things others have to endure, since they get the care, love and attention from their parents, family and the Company.

The CEO advised the bursary recipients apart from concentrating on their studies, to consider getting engaged in some sporting activity, as this is an important element to aid in building teamwork, a good attitude, as well as mental and physical fitness.

President of the Guyana Trades Union Congress and President of the Postal and Telecommunications Workers Union, Ms. Gillian Burton, in brief remarks said that the bursary award showed the Company’s confidence in the children’s ability to meet the challenges that lay ahead.

Ms. Burton urged the awardees to keep their eyes on the prize while keeping focused to their goals. She observed that the majority of the recipients of awards were girls and reiterated the need for attention to be focused on all children, including boys who are seemingly being neglected.

Ms. Burton also charged parents to sit and work with their children while urging the children to engage themselves in harmless activities while in their secondary level of schooling.

Earlier DGM/PC Mr. Terry Holder, in opening remarks, said it is always a special occasion when as a Company, people feel good about what is offered to members of staff. According to Mr. Holder, this is a demonstration that GT&T cares from recruitment to retirement – seemingly a cradle to the grave policy.

Mr. Holder said that the hard work put in at the primary level had borne fruit, but that much more can be accomplished in the future. “I hope that you have the stamina and strength to see them through the stages ahead”, Mr. Holder told to the parents.

The event held in the Company’s canteen was chaired by Senior Manager, HR/IR/Security, Mr. Parasram Ramnarain with the Vote of Thanks being given by Labour Relations Officer, Ms Stella Douglas.
